The last section of elevated steel support beams for the Arlington Park grandstand were dropped like a tall cut-down tree (when lumberjacks cut out at the base of the trunk of a tall tree). Instead of a lumberjack, a demolition expert, using a cutting torch, cut through part of the base of two columns of steel that remained as part of the structure of the former Arlington Park racetrack grandstand at 2200 West Euclid Avenue in Arlington Heights. After the bases of the columns were partially cut, the top of one of the columns was nudged by construction/demolition equipment with a long boom and a pincher that looked like a serpent. Both steel columns crashed to the ground along with the cross-beam that attached the two columns at the top. The last steel for the grandstand structure was dropped at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2023. Demolition of the lower level of the grandstand marked the beginning of demolition on June 16, 2023.
The progress of the Arlington Park demolition has been a somber period for many fans of Arlington Park, and Tuesday was a significant milestone in the entire demolition process. Arlington Park granstand roof demolition began on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, when the extended boom of a demolition machine took a bite out of the roof at the southeast corner of the Arlington Park grandstand.
