Sam’s of Arlington Closes Permanently; Owner Welcomes Customers to Dine at Honey-Jam Cafe with Outdoor Patio

After 34 years of serving diners in their restaurant and carryout customer at the cash register, Sam’s of Arlington is closing permanently. Sam’s owner George Vassos posted a message announcing the closure on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 7:43 a.m.

❝ After 34 years as a staple of the community in Arlington Heights and the surrounding areas we regret to inform you that Sam’s of Arlington will be closing it’s doors forever. This was a very difficult decision, one which we did not take lightly. And after serious consideration unfortunately Sam’s is not in a position to withstand a second shutdown, as we are still recovering from the first shutdown of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We appreciate your patronage and support for the last ten plus years and we thank you for letting us be part of your family. The memories made here at Sam’s will be cherished always. Sadly we have to say goodbye to our staff, friends and loyal customers and wish you all good health and happiness. Stay strong, stay safe and stay healthy.❞

George added, “We would love to see all your familiar faces at our other location, Honey-Jam Cafe, located at 2944 West Euclid Avenue in Arlington Heights. We invite you to join us for breakfast or lunch.” George Vassos owned and managed the restaurant.

Sam’s of Arlington, founded in 1985 by Sam Trakas, was located in the Clearbook Plaza strip mall at the southwest corner of Central Road and Wilke Road. The restaurant re-opened following the first COVID-19 business restrictions imposed by the State of Illinois on Friday, June 26, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.

He broke the news to customers on the restaurant’s Facebook page a day earlier, saying it was a very difficult decision that he did not take lightly. But after serious consideration, Vassos said the restaurant isn’t in a position to withstand the most recent state-ordered temporary ban on indoor dining due to COVID-19. He said the restaurant is still recovering from the first shutdown, having been closed for three months at the onset of the pandemic.

“The memories made here at Sam’s will be cherished always,” Vassos wrote. “Sadly we have to say goodbye to our staff, friends and loyal customers and wish you all good health and happiness. Stay strong, stay safe and stay healthy.”

The eatery was known for a wide host of fare at affordable prices, including ribs, steak sandwiches, prime rib and roast duck. It also had a full-service bar and private party room.

Vassos encouraged patrons to visit his other restaurant, Honey-Jam Cafe at 2944 W. Euclid Ave., which remains open daily for breakfast and lunch on its outdoor patio.
